Top 5 Wednesday: Books You Didn't Get to in 2017

Hello, biblios!

I've loved watching the Top 5 Wednesday videos on Booktube, and thought it would be fun to take the topics on as blog posts.

Yay, regular content!

Top 5 Wednesday is hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes, and you can find topics and discussion at the corresponding Goodreads group.

This week's topic is: Books you didn't get to in 2017.

Oh, there are many! But I took a look over my TBR case, and pulled out five that I really, really should have gotten to last year ...

... and damn well am going to get to this year!

Blogging about it will make me more likely to do it, right?

Right?

1. Cinder by Marissa Meyer — I believe this was originally published in 2012, and it's been on my TBR case for at least a full year, and probably longer. And I mean ... I'm pretty much the last actual human on Earth who hasn't read the Lunar Chronicles.

The series consists of five retellings of classic fairy tales, and this is (obviously) a new take on Cinderella — except in this book, our main lady is a cyborg who works as a mechanic. I really want to get into this series because so many people love the books, and now I have no excuse for not reading it in 2018.

2. Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell — This hefty classic wasn't even on my radar until somewhat recently, and its interest factor for me was steadily increased thanks to Olive at abookolive, who praised it multiple times, and even labeled it her favorite book of 2017.

In this novel, a widowed country doctor in 19th century England remarries in order to provide a mother figure for his daughter, and that new mother brings her own daughter into the family as well. The book explores this blended family and all the ups and downs they experience.

3. The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden — This book has sort of suddenly been everywhere on the bookternet, and it seems like almost everyone adores it. It's a dark fairy tale set in the Russian wilderness, involving demons, spirits, magic, and a nasty stepmother — what else could you want?

4. The Reader by Traci Chee — This young adult fantasy is set in a world where ... no one reads. NO ONE READS AT ALL. The very idea is too awful to contemplate — but a story where a young girl defies that reality and takes up a book in order to help find her kidnapped aunt? That sounds intriguing, for sure.

5. Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst — Two simple words, my friends: LESBIAN PRINCESSES. Seriously, that is all I need to know. One princess is set to marry in order to form a strategic alliance, but she soon finds herself falling for someone else — the sister of her betrothed.

Yes yes yes. Lesbian princesses, all the way!

I am definitely making it a specific goal to read these five books this year. In fact, now I kind of want to read them all right now!

What books are still on your TBR from last year? Are you making them a priority, or letting new releases leapfrog over them? Do tell!
